STARS: Solar-Terrestrial data Analysis and Reference System

SM0015

A design and development of STARS (Solar-Terrestrial data Analysis and Reference System) is carried out by the STARS group centering on the Ehime University Synthesis Information Media Center in order to build the academic research environment for analyzing efficiently the observational data enormously accumulated every year including an ISTP plan. In STARS, it is possible to search and download observational data across boundaries by putting in a database the information on the STP system and observational data currently distributed in various places (metadata). And, these data plot functions and analysis functions are also supported. Furthermore, a user can also add an original analysis function. As a data file form which STARS treats, the data of various formats including binary formats, such as CDF, ASCII forms, a graphics file format, etc. are supported.

In STARS Version 5 of the latest version, the user interface has been remarkably improved. As the result, it changes to a tool which is easy to use for a researcher and also a general user. Furthermore, the kind and the number of files of data to treat also increased sharply. The number of records registered into the STARS metadata base serves as 28 Missions, 79 Teams, 157 Data, and the number about 1,900,000 files of Files in September, 2005. In addition, the latest version of STARS is downloadable gratuitously from the following site.

STARS Version 5 manuals (STARS5manual_e.doc / STARS5manual.doc) explain the usage of STARS5 and the set up file of STARS5 is stored in this CD-ROM. STARS operates on Windows (XP or 2000) connected to the network.

1. Policy and Regulation of STRAS

General Policy for STARS Acceptable Use

The participating candidate to STARS development needs to consult to a STARS workgroup. Redistribution of all the programs is forbidden about STARS application. And, unapproved rewriting of a source code and reverse Assen Bull of a binary file are forbidden.

Regulation of STARS User Acceptable Use

A STARS user needs use registration in advance. In registration, you have to obtain permission of a STARS workgroup.
It is necessary to carry all the STARS data accesses through a STARS system (application).
Redistribution of all the applications of STARS is forbidden. A user downloads and uses STARS application from a STARS WWW site. Please report the bug discovered at the time of STARS application use to a STARS workgroup.
The data file Acceptable Use Policy of observational data applies to the Acceptable Use Policy of each data site correspondingly. A user is shown it when the data Acceptable Use Policy for every data downloads data on STARS.
In addition, a STARS user needs to use according to the newest Acceptable Use Policy in a STARS WWW site.

2. File Download

It is demonstrated how to Login the STARS system and how to download and analyze the data. The procedure is as follows: Login, Selection of Period/Data, Download of Observation Data File, Data File Addition to the STARS Project List to Plot and plot.

3. Plot Functions

It is presented how to plot data and how to use functions to support analysis.

Data Plot:
In STARS, spectrum of various data can be displayed in colors.
In the STARS, plots of various image data can be displayed.
In the STARS, geomagnetism (Magnetogram) and various indices (for instance, Kp index) can be plotted.

Functions to Support Analysis:
Time Display Function
Capture Function
Sampling Function
Function to Convert Coordinates
Adjustment of Line of Line Plot
Record of Events
Data Acquisition

4. Use of STARS Project List

The data selection and download can be skipped after saving to STARS Project List.
The same plot result can be shared by sending STARS Project List to another user.
