EISCAT database

Name of Database EISCAT database
Institution Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Nagoya University
National Institute of Polar Research
Contents The European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) radar system is funded and operated by six countries including Japan. The EISCAT radars are located in Tromsø (69.6 deg N, 19.2 deg E), Kiruna (67.9 deg N, 20.4 deg E), Sodankylä (67.4 deg N, 26.6 deg E), and Longyearbyen (78 deg N, 16.1 deg E). Ionospheric plasma parameters measured with the radar system are the electron density, electron and ion temperatures, ion velocity at altitudes between 80 and 1600 km (dependent on radars and those modes). In addition to the plasma parameters, ionospheric conductivity, electric field and neutral wind, derived from EISCAT and modeled data, are open to the public.

Public Offering of Database

The EISCAT data are the intellectual property of the EISCAT Scientific Association. They may be freely used for the purpose of illustration for teaching and for non-commercial scientific research, provided that the source is acknowledged and to the extent justified by the non-commercial purpose to be achieved. Substantial use of these data should be discussed at an early stage with knowledgeable scientists within the EISCAT Scientific Association (e.g., Y. Ogawa (the data representative of Japan; yogawa@nipr.ac.jp)). An example of the acknowledgement statement is as follows:

We are indebted to the director and staff of EISCAT for operating the facility and supplying the data. EISCAT is an international association supported by research organizations in China (CRIRP), Finland (SA), France (CNRS, till end of 2006), Germany (DFG, till end of 2011), Japan (NIPR and STEL), Norway (NFR), Sweden (VR), and the United Kingdom (NERC).
